Při jedné audienční hostině mu zaskočilo sousto a začal se dusit. Přítomní se však báli zasáhnout. Odhodlal se až šlechtic Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic, který panovníka silně uhodil do zad, čímž mu uvolnil dýchací cesty a fakticky mu zachránil život. Nejenom že panovník přehlédl toto hrubé porušení etikety, ale svého zachránce odměnil sumou ve výši 4000 tolarů.

Once at a feast he began to choke after taking a large bite. His guests and subjects were too afraid to get involved and help out. It was only the nobleman, Kryštof Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice, who intervened by striking the monarch hard on the back, freeing his airways and saving his life. Not only did Rudolf II excuse Kryštof for his shocking actions, but he also rewarded his saviour with a sum of 4,000 thalers.
