O mládí pozdějšího husitského vojevůdce příliš informací nemáme. Je ovšem známo, že kolem roku 1408 se přidal do lapkovské družiny jistého Matěje Vůdce, s nímž a dalšími kumpány podnikal na území jižních Čech loupežná přepadení. Namířená byla hlavně proti Jindřichovi III. z Rožmberka, coby největší ekonomické síle v regionu. Rok nato ale byla Vůdcova skupina rozprášena a její členové skončili v lepším případě v žaláři, v horším na popravišti. Po obdržení milosti Žižka nastoupil do Václavových služeb jako „vrátník“ královského paláce. Díky tomu se dostal do Prahy, kde začal navštěvovat kázání reformního kněze Jana Husa.
