Rudolfa II. fascinovala i mnoha mýty opředená židovská kultura a pražským židům přisoudil mnoho nových práv. To se však vůbec nelíbilo Pražanům a jejich útoky na Židovské město nabíraly na intenzitě. Legenda říká, že slavný rabbi Löw tomu nehodlal přihlížet a rozhodl se konat. Povídá se, že jedné noci se rabínovi ve snu zjevil nápis: „Vytvoř z hlíny tvora, který ti bude pomáhat proti všem nepřátelům!“
Těsně před rozbřeskem na břehu Vltavy potají uplácal z mokré hlíny spolu s dvěma svými žáky ležící postavu obrovského člověka. Muži si poté stoupli k sobě a jeden po druhém začali na povel rabína postavu sedmkrát obcházet a říkat posvátná slova. Během tohoto rituálu hliněné tělo vyschlo a začalo velmi silně žhnout.
