Do bitvy u Kresčaku, kde 26. srpna 1346 český král padl, se Jan Lucemburský nechal vést slepý. Byla to bitva ve stoleté válce mezi Francií a Anglií a český král zde bojoval pod korouhví francouzského krále Filipa VI. Podle kronikáře Beneše Krabice z Weitmile v ní pronesl slavnou větu: „Toho bohdá nebude, aby český král z boje utíkal“. Král se tak stal hrdinou celé Evropy, mluvilo se o něm na všech dvorech.
